Thinking of walking one of the Camino de Santiago routes but not sure where to start or what to expect? We've compiled a list of some of your top Camino questions to help you get prepped for your pilgrimage!
Are there any specific etiquette or rules I should follow while walking the Camino?
- Honour the spiritual and cultural significance of the Camino. Be mindful of its historical importance and the pilgrims who have walked before you.
- Greet fellow pilgrims. It is customary to greet fellow pilgrims with a "Buen Camino" as you walk by.
- Yield to those walking uphill. It is considered polite to give the right of way to uphill walkers.
- Observe local customs and traditions. Particularly watching for certain dress codes in religious areas.
- Share communal spaces. Be considerate of others in the shared spaces by keeping noise levels low and keeping tidy.
- Leave no trace. This goes without saying for all outdoor activities, be mindful of the environment, leave nothing behind.
- Be patient and considerate. The Camino attracts people from diverse backgrounds and walking speeds.
- Embrace the spirit of kindness and offer assistance to fellow pilgrims in need, share stories and experiences and be open to connecting with new people along the way!
How can I handle any potential language barriers while on the Camino?
While language barriers do arise, particularly in rural areas, locals are usually used to pilgrims moving through their towns. That said, it is worth learning a few phrases before you set off on your journey as people generally really appreciate tourists making an effort with their language and culture. How do I navigate the camino trail?
The yellow arrow is one of the most iconic images of the Camino de Santiago. The arrow points pilgrims in the direction of Santiago de Compostela and can be found on walls, rocks, trees and even the ground. One simple piece of advice: Never turn unless there is a yellow arrow clearly instructing you to do so.
What is the Camino passport, how does it work, and where do I get one?
The Credencial, or Pilgrim’s Passport, is a small folded document that records the places that a pilgrim passes through on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Along the Camino, pilgrims request a dated stamp at every overnight lodgings, thus verifying that they have covered at least 100 kilometres, the minimum required to obtain a pilgrim’s certificate. How physically demanding is the Camino, and how should I prepare?
As with all active holidays, one of the best things you can do to prepare is to get physically fit and ready for your journey. Make sure to get plenty of hiking in of different gradients so you're feeling strong and ready! Our guides and partners recommend, as a minimum, 40 minutes of aerobic type exercise (running, swimming, biking, hill walking, or gym work) two to three times per week for two to six months leading up to your departure!
What kind of accommodation options are available along the Camino?
Accommodation along the Camino ways can vary depending on your preference. Most commonly, the pilgrim hostels are known as Albergues. These hostels offer basic dormitory-style rooms with bunk beds and shared facilities, a great place to be for meeting fellow pilgrims.

How long does the Camino de Santiago typically take to complete?
