Special Contribution to the Irish Travel Industry Award
From shipping containers to luxury cruise holidays, George Barter has witnessed the remarkable growth and diversification of the Irish travel industry since the 1960s. At the Irish Travel Awards, he received the Special Contribution to the Irish Travel Industry Award in recognition of a lifetime dedicated to a business first established by his great-grandfather, Joseph Barter, in 1865.
For more than five decades, George has had a front-row seat to the industry’s evolution, guiding the company through changing trends, challenges and opportunities. From adventurous 1970s honeymoons to Mallorca, to Camino walks and river cruising, to navigating economic downturns and creating magical family trips to Lapland, the business has continually adapted while remaining true to its core values.
As Ireland’s oldest established travel agency, J. Barter Travel has become a cornerstone of the national travel sector, with George playing a central role in shaping its success.

George described the award as a wonderful honour and paid tribute to the dedicated staff and fellow agents who have supported the company’s journey.
