Perfect Summer Escapes to Avoid the Heatwave

Louise Sawitzkaja • 10 June 2025

Summer is a time to enjoy long days, blue skies, and unforgettable adventures — but not everyone dreams of sweltering under the sun. With rising temperatures and more frequent heatwaves across Europe and beyond, many travelers are now searching for destinations that offer ideal summer weather without the intense heat. Whether you're hoping for outdoor exploration, cultural discovery, or relaxing coastal views, you can enjoy the season in comfort. In this post, we highlight some of the trendiest destinations for summer 2025 where you can stay cool while still soaking up the best of what the season has to offer.

The Azores, Portugal

Rising from the North Atlantic, the Azores are a captivating Portuguese archipelago known for their lush volcanic terrain, emerald-green hills, and dramatic coastlines. Often called a nature lover’s paradise, these islands offer a serene escape filled with crater lakes, geothermal springs, and breathtaking viewpoints. Even in peak summer, temperatures remain comfortably mild — typically ranging between 20° and 25°C — making it ideal for outdoor activities without the discomfort of extreme heat.

From hiking the volcanic trails of São Miguel to spotting whales off the coast or soaking in the thermal waters of Furnas, the Azores invite exploration at a relaxed pace. With a growing focus on sustainable tourism, the region offers an authentic and uncrowded alternative to traditional beach destinations, blending adventure with tranquility in one of Europe’s most eco-conscious retreats.

The Easiest Way to Get There

Travelling from Ireland to the Azores requires connecting flights, as direct routes are unavailable. São Miguel Island, the main entry point, is accessible from Dublin Airport (DUB) to Ponta Delgada, with one or more layovers.

Flight Duration: from 8 to 12 hours, depending on layover durations.

If you're seeking a truly distinctive summer escape, Iceland offers an unforgettable experience. While it may not fit the traditional image of a "sun holiday," its long daylight hours and refreshingly cool summer temperatures — typically between 10° and 15°C — make it perfect for active exploration. This land of fire and ice is rich in natural marvels, from thundering waterfalls and black sand beaches to steaming geothermal fields and dramatic volcanic landscapes.

Highlights include a soothing dip in the Blue Lagoon, scenic drives along the Golden Circle, and hikes through awe-inspiring national parks like Þingvellir and Vatnajökull. Iceland’s growing popularity stems from its ability to combine adventure and relaxation — whale watching, glacier walks, and hot spring soaks — all without the stress of stifling summer heat. It’s a destination where wild beauty and cooler temperatures go hand in hand.

As a marketing assistant at Barter’s Travelnet Cork, I’m lucky enough to be talking about and researching stunning destinations every day. One place that has stuck with me and become my favourite travel destination is Bilbao. My sister has lived there for the past 4 years, so I’ve been lucky enough to visit quite a few times, each time bringing new experiences and plenty of memories. When I found out that Cork Airport now has a direct flight to Bilbao, I think it's safe to say I was pretty excited. Bilbao: More Than Just a City Bilbao is one of those places that manages to surprise you each time you visit. It has a mix of modern architecture, historical charm, and an atmosphere that’s laid-back but buzzing at the same time. If you’re not familiar with the city, it’s probably best known for the Guggenheim Museum (definitely worth the visit), but there’s so much more to Bilbao than that. Every time I visit, I always feel like I’m uncovering something new. Whether it’s a quiet street in Casco Viejo or a hidden café serving the best coffee you’ve ever had, Bilbao always seems to have something up its sleeve.
