With Earth Day (22nd April) approaching - we have compiled a list of tips & tricks on how you can be an Eco-Traveller.

1. Visit less popular destinations

Over-tourism has become a major problem globally. It has seen issues rise with local residents quality of living and the environment due to overcrowding, littering, excess energy use etc. If you are planning to travel during peak seasons (i.e. the summer months), try to avoid popular tourist destinations.

Alternatively, you could look at visiting less "touristy" or sustainable locations such as:

Palau has become the global pioneer of eco-tourism. With it's governments promise to protect it's eco-system & local marine life - Palau encourages tourists to do the same by "leaving no trace behind". Upon arrival, all visitors must sign a pledge to ensure they act responsibly & eco-consciously for the duration of their stay. Furthermore, Palau educates tourists on how to be a eco-traveller by providing sustainably sourced food in local restaurants & encouraging the use of "reef-friendly" sunscreen!

2. Travel less, but stay longer

Go on a longer getaway rather than multiple short stays throughout the year. Cutting down on the amount of flights you take each year would reduce your carbon footprint massively. Staying in a destination for a longer duration also allows you to fully immerse yourself in the culture, scenery & experiences. It's a win-win!

3. Look for direct flights

You could also try travelling closer to home and look for direct flights if possible. It is known that planes produce most of it's carbon emissions during take-off & landing. Therefore, taking fewer connection flights is a much greener way of travelling.

4. Visit places that need support

Consider visiting countries that are recovering from a disaster. Many countries that have unfortunately been struck by natural disasters such as earthquakes or floods, heavily rely on tourism revenue to rebuild their local communities. By supporting local restaurants, shops, hotels & attractions - you can make a huge difference!

5. Use public transport

Where possible try to use public transport like buses or trains rather than taxis or rental cars. It is a more sustainable & cheaper mode of transport. Many cities/towns also offer bike rentals which is an ideal way to explore the area at your own pace & provides a fun activity!

Travel doesn’t have to end when the sun sets – in fact, it can just be beginning. Noctotourism , the practice of exploring destinations at night, is a growing trend that opens the door to unforgettable experiences. From night safaris and polar light chases to stargazing and nocturnal dives, the night offers a magical perspective that daytime simply cannot. Exploring the world in darkness lets you see nature, wildlife, and urban landscapes in a completely different light, creating memories that are often more intimate, mysterious, and unforgettable. Nighttime travelling offers many advantages: Peace and privacy – fewer crowds mean you can enjoy scenery and natural sites at ease. Unique natural phenomena – many wildlife activities, polar lights, and starry skies can only be fully experienced at night. Otherworldly atmosphere – familiar locations take on a new, magical character when illuminated by moonlight or are they swallowed by darkness Adventure and romance – from night safaris to nocturnal dives, noctotourism blends thrill with peace.
