The Adventure Seeker’s Guide to Greece’s Lesser-Known Islands"

Kelly Collins • 4 February 2026

Now that summer is creeping up, many of us are starting to think about which holidays and destinations to tick off our bucket lists. To make that decision a little easier, today I’m going to guide you through some of the Greek islands that are perfect for adventure, discovery, and unforgettable experiences. While many dream of sun-soaked beaches and romantic sunsets, there is another side of Greece that is perfect for travellers who want more than just a postcard view. For those who crave hiking, swimming and discovering landscapes that feel untouched, there are many Greek islands that are built perfectly for that adventure!

  1. Crete

A prime example of this adventurous spirit is Crete. As Greece's largest Island, it offers an incredible mix of mountains, gorges and beaches. You could spend a day hiking the dramatic Samaria Gorge, then unwind at a secluded beach that can only be reached by foot or boat. Inland villages, rugged roads, and hidden swimming spots create a dynamic experience that balances activity and relaxation, giving travellers the chance to explore deeply while still enjoying the comforts of local food and culture.

2. Naxos

Giving a similar mix of adventure and accessibility. Naxos that is often overlooked for more famous neighbours, features fertile valleys, traditional mountain villages and long open beaches. Ancient footpaths connect inland communities, making exploration on foot effortless, while the coastline invites swimming and water sports. Naxos is, in particular, very rewarding as part of an island-hopping journey. Providing a slower, grounded experience in between busier stops.

3. Karpathos

Is for those seeking raw landscapes, windswept cliffs, steep hiking trails and beaches often reached by a trek, making this island ideal for adventurous travellers. Strong winds in Karpathos make perfect conditions for wind and kite surfing, and its lack of mass tourism makes your experience very authentic. This island is most definitely not about convenience and luxury but nature challenge and discovery.

4. Ikaria

If you're looking for an island that offers a quieter, yet equally rewarding adventure, Ikaria is definitely somewhere you should stop off. Known for its laid-back lifestyle and long-lived locals. This isalmnd its dotted with hiking trails, remote villages, remote villages and naturally hot springs. It's perfect for travellers who want activity paired with a slower rhythm of life. Where exploration happens naturally, not shaped by schedules, but it unfolds by curiosity.

5. Amorgos

Is an island defined by movement and discovery. Its network of ancient walking paths weaved through rugged ridges, leading you into charming villages and descending into hidden coves with deep blue waters perfect for swimming. Each step you take on this island offers a sense of connection to the island's history, natural history, and beauty. This is an island where hiking is not just an activity but a way to immerse yourself fully in the authentic culture, breathtaking landscapes and unhurried lifestyle that make Greeces less visited island so special

The Notre Dame Cathedral

Spring and summer are ideal for adventure-focused travel in Greece with mild temperatures and longer days perfect for hiking, swimming and discovering hidden spots. Spending long on fewer islands allows travellers to fully immerse themselves in both landscape and culture.

Whether you're planning an island-hopping route focused on outdoor activities, seeking remote beaches or wanting to explore more authentic villages, it is important to design a trip tailored to your pace and style. Adventure in Greece doesn't have to be complicated, it just has to suit you.
