Zermatt, Switzerland

Picture-postcard town and high-altitude skiing beneath the Matterhorn.

  • Race from the highest point on the Theodul glacier all the way down to the resort on linked reds.
  • Head across the Italian border to explore Cervinia and ski two countries in one trip.
  • Pair classics like fondue with incredible views in some of the world’s best ski resort restaurants.

Zermatt sets the bar high, and not just because it’s got the highest slopes in Europe, way up to 3,883m. We’re talking 350km of fab intermediate and advanced terrain, with tons of linked blues and reds, wide-open glacier skiing, and mountain scenery that’ll knock your ski socks off. Easy-going runs and tasty pizza and pasta lunch stops are just over the Italian border in Cervinia. And with glass-bottomed cabins on the Alpine crossing cable car, a trip over is a must for the views alone.

The town is the definition of ‘picture perfect’, with wooden chalets and horse-drawn sleighs gliding through the streets, as well as luxurious hotels and shops. And it’s also one of the best resorts in the world for foodies – don’t miss lunch with a view at Chez Vrony up on the mountain, or classic Swiss fondue at Saycheese! in town. The nightlife’s a highlight too, whether you want to party ‘til late at Hennu Stall or listen to smooth jazz at Pink Music Bar.

Make sure you visit the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise to get 360-degree views of peaks, valleys and 14 other glaciers – and you can go inside this glacier as well, to see snow sculptures and centuries-old ice formations.

Skiing in Zermatt

Zermatt shares its 350km ski area with Cervinia, just across the border in Italy. It’s got the highest ski slopes in the Alps, reaching up to 3,883m, so you can expect great snow and views. The Zermatt side is an intermediate’s playground with mostly long reds, though there’s also a good ski school and challenging off-piste for experts.
