Zell am See ski holidays
- Varied skiing and a medieval lakeside town with lots going on.
- With great nursery areas and easy blues, you’ll learn the basics in no time.
- Cobbled old centre filled with boutiques, cafés and friendly bars.
- Lots of kid-friendly activities, from bowling to ice skating.
Gentle slopes and excellent ski schools make Zell a favourite for families and first-timers. On the mountain, there’s a mix of pretty, tree-lined trails and wide-open pistes where you can take in views of the lake. There are some great kids’ ski areas dotted around, and intermediates and advanced skiers have the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, not to mention runs in the linked Ski Circus area to play with.
The town has a picture-postcard feel. Frescoed buildings line the cobbled main square, and a waterfront promenade looks out across the lake to the Hohe Tauern mountains beyond. The old centre is filled with shops and cafés, as well as some excellent bars – from après hotspots with packed-out dancefloors to cosy pubs where you can catch up over a quiet drink. There’s a great range of accommodation too, and whether you choose a high-end hotel or a little, family-run place, you can expect a friendly welcome and personal service.
For some more off-slope fun, whizz down the alpine coaster in neighbouring Kaprun or cheer on the local ice hockey team at the rink. Or for something a bit more laid-back, enjoy an afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel or challenge your mates to a pub quiz at Frenkie's.
3* Hotel Waldhof
Zell am See, Austria
- Ski right back to the hotel.
- Relax in the pools, hot tubs and saunas.
- Two play areas with après fun for tots to teens.
The Waldhof hits the mark when it comes to facilities. First up is a relaxing wellness area, where you can swim, soak in a hot tub or stretch out in a sauna. Next, you've got two separate play areas for the kids. For the tots, there's one with a ball pit and climbing tower, while older ones and teens have a room with computer consoles. And sticking with the games theme, there's also another room with classics like table football and pool.
As for looks, the whole place has an alpine-meets-modern feel, with lots of light tones and plenty of natural wood. There's a mix of rooms for up to five people, which are split between the main building and a separate annexe – and as an extra perk, each one comes with a balcony too.
Moving on to food, there's a hot and cold buffet spread to set you up for the slopes. Then when you're done for the day, you can tuck into a tasty afternoon snack, before rounding things off with a 4-course evening meal that's filled with local flavours.
