Bardonecchia flies under the radar compared to a lot of Italian resorts, but it’s got 100km of quiet runs weaving through a pine forest – not to mention, it hosted the snowboarding events at the 2006 Winter Olympics. There are two nursery zones at either end of town, so beginners won’t have far to go for lessons no matter where you’re staying. And for anyone comfy on the slopes already, most of the mountain is made up of reds. If tricks are your thing, you won’t want to miss the Olympic snow park.
This is a year-round town rather than a just a ski resort, so it might not have that typical alpine look but there’s lots going on. The food especially is a highlight, with lots of restaurants dishing up traditional recipes made with local produce – like cajette, a kind of gnocchi made with Piedmont potatoes, and gofri waffles stuffed with anything from cheese to chocolate.
It’s also a popular place for families so there’s plenty of other activities to do while you’re here, from snowshoeing to the 1km-long alpine coaster.

From the outside, the Villa Frejus looks just like a large, modern family home. In fact, it houses 11 comfy apartments, ideal for families and groups.
Furnished with care, each apartment is simple and fairly spacious. There’s a choice of room set ups, from studios that sleep 3 people to apartments that sleep 6. A well stocked kitchenette makes self-catering a breeze too.
You’ll also get some great extras at the Frejus, like a sauna and fitness room, plus a kids’ play area. There’s a boot room for storing your gear – and it’s got a washing machine too – and free WiFi is available throughout.
Rooms
All apartments have a kitchenette with oven, microwave, hobs, fridge, freezer, and tea and coffee making facilities, as well as a flatscreen TV, free WiFi, hairdryer and safe. Towels, linen and end-of-stay cleaning (except kitchen) are included.

1 bedroom apartment - sleeps 1-4: Twin bedroom (can be separate or on a mezzanine), living room with a double roll-out bed when booked for four, private shower and WC.
1 bedroom apartment - sleeps 1-5: Twin bedroom (can be separate or on a mezzanine), living room with a double roll-out bed and an extra single bed when booked for five, private shower and WC.
Duplex 2 bedroom apartment - sleeps 1-6: Duplex apartment with a ground-floor living room with double roll-out bed, stairs up to a mezzanine area with a twin bedroom (can be separate or open) and a second bedroom with two extra single beds, private shower and WC.
