PART OF THE Milky Way SKI AREA
Snow range: 1,350-2,823m
Resort height: 1,509m
Milky Way: 400km
Skiing in Sauze d'Oulx
Sauze d’Oulx’s on the northern edge of the 400km Milky Way ski area, which links to Montgenèvre in France. The wooded slopes above the resort are an intermediate's playground, with lots of easy-going reds to carve down. Or if you’re just starting out, head to the magic carpet in the Sportina sector. And for the most challenging slopes, check out the Olympic downhill in nearby Sansicario.
Beginners
Your ski school lessons will be on Sauze’s wide, open nursery slopes, and getting there is easy – just hop on the bus to Sportinia from the town centre or take the Sportinia chairlift.
Intermediates
Head towards Moncrons to cruise down some of Sauze’s pretty tree-lined reds, and to ski from the top of the mountain to bottom, go to Coe Basset. And Sauze’s part of the 400km Milky Way area, so as long as the snow conditions are right, there are plenty more runs to explore across the wider area.
Advanced
In Sauze d’Oulx itself, there are a couple of blacks to get your ski legs going on – head to the Moncrons area or try out the moguls on Genevris. Seasoned pros will also love exploring the wider Milky Way area, with testing blacks in Sansicario and Sestriere. Don’t miss a whizz down the Kandahar Banchetta slope, used for the men's downhill in 2006 Olympics.
Snowboarding
Speedy boarders will love the reds that wind through Sauze’s trees. And if you’re into freestyle, head to Sestriere’s snow park to catch some air on the different features.
Ski two countries
From Sauze d'Oulx, you can ski over to the other resorts in the Milky Way including Sestriere, Claviere, Sansicario, all in Italy, and Montgenèvre, in France. It can be time consuming to get to France on skis - it's much easier to drive there - but one day is included on your lift pass, so why not? From Sauze d'Oulx you'll need to ski west to Sansicario and then take a 2-stage gondola to near the Cesana Torinese which links to the French resort. Montgenèvre offers 100km of piste and on top of that, you'll get to say that you've skied two countries in one day.
4* Hotel Relais des Alpes
In Sauze d'Oulx, Italy
- You can be at the lifts in as little as 5 minutes.
- A hotel with its very own pub, The Queen's Lounge,
- Chill out in the hotel's sauna and hot tub.
A wee stroll from the Clotes chairlift, Hotel Relais des Alpes ticks the box for ski convenience. Plus, if you don’t fancy the 5-minute stroll, you’ve the option of paying a little extra to hop on the ski bus that stops right outside. You can tick off après convenience too – not only is the resort’s centre just around the corner, but you don’t even need to leave the hotel to go to the pub. The Queen’s Lounge is the place for a post-piste pint – you’ve never had a local quite as local as this.
Looks-wise, things are quite traditional here. Tiled floors, wooden fittings and a vintage colour scheme complete the classic Italian aesthetic and up the cosiness tenfold. When you’ve kicked off your ski boots for the day though, true toastiness can be found in the hotel’s spa – there’s an extra charge here, but you’ll get a week’s pass to relaxing in the sauna and hot tub.
It's not all about making a beeline for racking up at the pool table with a pint though. In addition to a warm, welcoming pub, the hotel’s also home to a traditional alpine restaurant. You’ll kick off your mornings here with buffet breakfasts and refuel in the evenings on local delicacies – the hotel’s wines and homemade desserts are especially worth looking out for.

Traditional and packed with character, the centre of town is filled with cobbled streets and old buildings roofed with giant stone slabs. Famed for its wild parties during the 1980s, it now manages to balance a lively après scene with a more family-friendly atmosphere. Snap up happy hour discounts in one of the bustling pubs or get a true taste of Italian culture with a glass of the local red in a cosy cellar bar. And as for accommodation, there are plenty of places just metres from the action, as well as some apartments and hotels tucked in the woods on the edge of the resort – ideal if you prefer more peaceful surroundings.
When it comes to alternative winter activities, try strapping on some snowshoes and stepping out on a snowy guided walk.
