San Martino di Castrozza
This is one of Italy’s smaller resorts, but with dramatic Dolomite views and well-groomed slopes, it’s definitely a case of quality over quantity. Terrain-wise, the mountainsides are fairly gentle, so it’s ideal if you’re just starting to venture beyond the nursery area. The runs themselves are pretty varied too, with wide-open mountaintop pistes and tree-lined trails lower down. And thanks to its southerly spot in the Dolomites, it’s got a great weather record – bluebird days here we come.
When it comes to alpine backdrops, San Martino village really brings it – set in a sunny bowl surrounded by thick pine forests and impressive rocky peaks. The nearest lifts are on the outskirts, but there’s a regular bus, so getting to and from your accommodation is hassle-free. And as après action also happens in the resort centre, you can drop off ski gear at your pad before heading out for an aperitif or two in one of the laid-back bars.
There’s more than one way to explore the mountains here. Wrap up for a guided walk through the forests, dash through the snow in the back of a horse-drawn sleigh or even take to the skies on a tandem paragliding flight.
