Austria
Austria’s a popular pick for ski holidays, with top-notch ski areas and a long tradition of hospitality. Villages ooze chocolate-box charm, with onion-domed churches and authentic wood-balconied buildings. And best of all, you’re in the home of après – it’s cheery and full of Austrian oompah-pah.
Ski info
Skiing in Austria’s all about scenic tree-lined runs and all-ability slopes. The lift systems are world class, with speedy, modern chairs and gondolas to whisk you up the mountain. Some resorts are lower altitude, but you’ll find well-groomed slopes and excellent snowmaking technology.
If you’re looking to ski a different piste every day, Austria’s biggest ski area, the Arlberg, joins St Anton and St Cristoph with over 300km of all-ability runs to get your ski legs pumping. The SkiWelt area, linking the villages Söll, Scheffau and Ellmau and SkiCircus with Saalbach are equally tempting with over 200km of varied terrain and standout views in every direction. Or if it’s your first time on the mountains, you can head to more compact spots like Rauris and Kaprun, perfect for finding your ski feet.

Après
Austria’s known for having the best après ski in the world. Steins of beer and lively bands will get you toe tapping in your ski boots. Many resorts have a couple of early-morning closers to keep you on the dancefloor till dawn.
Hotels & accommodation
Hotels are the norm in Austria – they’re often family-run and you’ll find homely accommodation and a warm welcome. Opt for half board and you can expect hearty mountain fare and wellness is a big thing here, so many have a spa, sauna or steam room too.
4* Gurglhof Apartments
Obergurgl, Austria
Charming Tyrolean village with high-altitude slopes and a great snow record.
- Peaceful resort filled with traditional alpine chalets.
- Lots of slopes designed for kids, so family ski days are sorted.
- Relax and unwind in quality hotels with spas, pools and childcare.
Up at 1,930m, Obergurgl’s one of the highest villages in the Alps, so it’s hard to beat for reliable snow conditions. The ski area packs in plenty of variety too, from gentle nursery slopes, tree-lined trails and wide-open pistes. Learners are well looked after by the excellent local ski school, and kids can have fun whizzing down the fun slopes and hitting mini jumps in the snow park.
The centuries-old village was around long before the ski lifts, so there’s an authentic feel with an 18th-century church and pretty, wooden buildings. There are plenty of top-notch hotels with great facilities, from pools to playrooms – and most are just metres from a lift. It’s a peaceful place in the evenings, with people settling in for relaxed dinners and cosy nightcaps by the fire. But if you fancy a little more action, a visit to the Nederhütte bar for après is a must. The energetic house band hits the stage at 4pm each day and gets the party going playing classic rock covers.
Looking for something different to do during your downtime? Swing by the Edelweiss and Gurgl’s horse riding centre and saddle up for a session in the indoor arena.
