Mayrhofen
Austria
Set between two different mountains, Mayrhofen’s local pistes are an intermediate’s playground, where you can clock up the kilometres cruising lots of linked reds and blues. And to really make the most of your lift pass, jump on the ski bus for high-altitude skiing on the nearby Hintertux glacier.
Off the mountain, Mayrhofen mixes authentic Austrian looks with a lively atmosphere. Timber chalets and frescoed buildings line the main street, with an onion-domed church at one end. Après action starts on the mountain, where slopeside bars fill up from mid-afternoon. Then after the sun sets, spend the night hopping between pubs and dancing in clubs. Or for a more leisurely evening, pop into a traditional hotel bar for a quiet drink and a catch-up. Speaking of hotels, there are heaps to choose from here, whether you’re after a bit of luxury or a no-frills guesthouse.
When you’re not up the mountain or kicking back in a bar, admire the snow-covered scenery from a horse-drawn sleigh. Or to get a bird’s eye view of the mountains, take to the skies with a professional pilot on a tandem paragliding flight.
3* Hotel Garni Obermair
Mayrhofen, Austria
- Relax in the sauna and steam room, or with a dip in the indoor pool.
- Traditional Austrian décor.
- Great-value hotel.
Starting life as a simple guesthouse, the Obermair has transformed into a popular, no-frills hotel.
Over the years, they've added an annexe, an indoor pool and a nice little wellness area. But through all the changes, the Obermair hasn't lost its traditional charm and typical Austrian wooden panelling.
The majority of our rooms are in the annexe – they're a little bit dated, and this is reflected in the price. If you're planning on spending a bit more time in your room, then you may want to choose one in the main building, which is decorated in a classic alpine style.
The heated indoor pool is a decent size – big enough for a few early morning laps, or a splash about after getting back from the slopes. The pool is located in the main building, along with the wellness area with Finnish sauna, herbal sauna, steam bath and rain showers.
When it comes to the food, start the day with a hearty buffet spread filled with fresh rolls, meats, cheeses, cereal and fruit. In the evening, you’ll have the freedom to get out and explore Mayrhofen’s many excellent restaurants.
Location-wise, you're just on the edge of town. The nearest bars and restaurants are just a couple of minutes away, and the Penken gondola is only 12 12-minute walk away. If you plan on getting out and about a little further into the Ziller Valley, the bus and train stations are both close by, and the ski bus stops right outside.
