Borovets
Great-value skiing and lively nightlife in a beautiful woodland setting.
- Lots of scenic, tree-lined slopes – ideal for cruising.
- Quality hotels that cost less than in other European ski resorts.
- Varied après, from clubs and bars to traditional Balkan pubs.
Meaning 'pine resort', Borovets is a great place to get started on skis – think easy-to-reach nursery slopes, tree-lined green runs and beautiful views all round. Ready for more? Check out the reds that are higher up the mountain, or make a beeline for the Borosport Snow Park to play on jumps and boxes. Whatever your level, you’ll be able to rack up the piste time without straining the bank balance thanks to ski lessons and lift passes that cost less than elsewhere in Europe.
There’s a cracking atmosphere down in the village, with bustling lunch spots perfectly set up for you to grab a bite to eat by the slopes. Venture towards the resort centre and the streets are lined with clubs where you can let loose on the dance floor and have a real laugh with your pals. Or to experience a slice of Bulgarian culture, pop into one of the wood-framed mehanas – a traditional Balkan pub. As for picking a hotel, you can choose from some quality stays with facilities for the whole gang, from pools and bowling alleys to gourmet restaurants.
Torchlit walks through the pine forest, evening ski shows, kids' workshops, pub crawls – there's always plenty going on for all ages off the slopes. You can even saddle up and go horse riding through the national park, or whizz through the snow on the back of a snowmobile.
Hotel Samokov
Borovets, Bulgaria
- Swim some lengths in the indoor pool.
- Toast the ski day in the hotel's sports bar.
- Close to the slopes and all the action in the resort centre.
The Samokov’s a simple pick which is ideal if you want to do Borovets on a budget, and still get a top-notch location. You'll no doubt feel like you're in an older hotel here, with some spaces and facilities that cry out for a bit of a refresh. But being in the centre of the resort and just steps from the main Yastrebets gondola, it's hard to beat if skiing, exploring the wider resort and saving pennies are your top priorities.
There are plenty of places to hang out when you’re not on the slopes. Swing by the lobby bar for a tipple or two, swim a few lengths in the big indoor pool, or pay a little extra to stretch out in the spa's Turkish bath and variety of saunas. There's even a bowling alley and a small indoor archery room, if you fancy adding target practise to your off-slope activities.
For the best room experience, go for one with a balcony – waking up to fresh air and views of the mountains is a winner. On the food front, you'll get a basic buffet breakfast spread included. With lots of tempting restaurants nearby, it's easy to find something to tickle your taste buds of an evening.
