The small ski area and compact town centre of Rauris make it the perfect pick if it’s your very first ski trip. There’s an excellent ski school and nursery slopes at the bottom of the main gondola, and blue runs start right to the top of the Schwarzwand mountain, so even beginners can ski with views over Austria’s highest mountain, the Grossglockner. There are mountain restaurants you can get to without doing any skiing, so mixed ability groups can split off for skiing and easily meet up for lunch.

The village centre’s small, but it’s still got a variety of shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes to check out. And all of the accommodation is just a short walk from the gondola and is usually family-run, too, giving it a home away from home feel.

When you’re not on your skis you can explore the Hohe Tauern National Park on a winter walk. Or learn a new skill and try ice-climbing at the outdoor Kolm Saigurn Ice Arena – there’s a 13 metres-high ice tower that even beginners can try out.
