Essence of Portugal
Fairytale castles, baking and wine tasting – this seven-day small group tour of Portugal will help you discover the essence of the country's food, wine and culture. Alongside a Travelmarvel Tour Director, you’ll begin your adventure in Lisbon, where you can join a pastel de nata baking class. These sweet custard tarts are a breakfast staple in the city’s cafes. Take a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage area of Sintra, a fairytale-like town of castles, enchanting gardens and a grand palace; and wander cobblestone streets to find another castle in Óbidos, one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval villages. The tour ends in Porto with an exclusive wine tasting with the owners of a private quinta, who can share their insight into the region’s famous port wine production.
Tour Highlights
These exclusive or unique events are designed to deepen your experience, taking you on an inspiring journey beneath the surface of local history, culture and traditions. What's more, these once-in-a-lifetime moments are often not available to a regular traveller. The following experiences are just a taste of what is prepared especially for you.
- Sail The Canals Of Aveiro
Settle in for a scenic boat ride in a traditional Portuguese ‘moliceiro’ along the canals of Aveiro, known as ‘Little Italy’. These brightly-painted boats are similar to the gondolas found in Venice.
- Pastel de Nata Cooking Experience
Learn how to make Portugal's world-famous sweet custard tart, the pastel de nata! We'll arrange for you to take part in a hands-on baking class led by a local Portuguese baker.
- Join The Locals At A Countryside Quinta
The best way to get to know Portuguese culture? During a hosted meal at a quinta in the scenic countryside. Chat to locals while enjoying a dinner of locally-grown food and wine.
- Add a river cruise
Combine this small group tour of Portugal with our Douro Discovery river cruise. It will give you the chance to explore the beauty and wine of UNESCO-listed Douro Valley, and visit Salamanca.
