Cancun Holidays
Holidays to Cancun pack plenty in. On top of the sand beaches, there are great bars, modern shopping malls and plenty of Mayan ruins to explore.
Mexican star
Back in the Seventies, Cancun was just a small fishing town on the northeast coast of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. Today, it’s a huge resort that comes in two parts. There’s the downtown area with its markets and local cantinas, and then you’ve got the Hotel Zone that comes with restaurants, shopping malls and nightclubs – and an extra-long strip of beach. Just so you know, the beaches on this stretch of coastline sometimes experience increased levels of seaweed – called sargassum. It’s influenced by the weather and ocean currents. If your hotel’s affected, the staff will do everything they can to clear it.
A beach that won’t run out
The sands that spool along the Hotel Zone go on and on – you’ve got 22 kilometres at your disposal here. And you have a choice of beach territory, too. The north side comes with tranquil water, as it’s protected from the open ocean by a small island. Over to the east, meanwhile, you’re facing the Caribbean – that means beautiful turquoise water and livelier waves.
Fantastic nightlife
Cancun nights can be whatever you want them to be. The clubs in the Hotel Zone go all out with state-of-the-art light shows and guest DJs like Tiesto spinning the decks, but they also have acrobats and impersonators. There are lively sports bars and chilled-out lounges, plus many restaurants have live music. You can even see ballet at the Convention Centre here.
Daytrips to Tulum
Mexico is rich with Mayan history and one of its best-preserved coastal sites is a 90-minute drive away at Tulum. Perched above 40-foot cliffs, here you’ll find the ruins of a once-thriving civilisation. There’s a lot to see, but don’t miss the pyramid-shaped El Castillo, the Temple of the Descending God and the Temple of the Frescoes – this one comes with a first-class collection of murals.
4* Catalonia Riviera Maya
In Riviera Maya, Mexico - Caribbean Coast, Mexico
The Catalonia Riviera Maya pairs a beachfront plot with a more-is-more mentality.
If variety's the spice of life, then this place highlights it to the full. There's a restaurant and a bar for every day of the week, plus a four-strong choice of pools, so even the fussiest sorts won't be short of eating, drinking and swimming spots.
It's right on the beach, too, so you can flit between the pools and the sands in seconds. Just so you know, the beach is quite rocky, so it might be a good idea to pack water shoes. The hotel's activity list's pretty lengthy as well, with the likes of scuba diving and snorkelling on the cards.
Holidays here come with 24/7 support on the TUI app and by phone. You won't have a TUI rep visiting your hotel, but can still get in touch around the clock. Find out more about our service while you're away.
Rooms
Premium double rooms can be upgraded to deluxe – the latter has newer furniture and modern décor. Or, you can opt for a Honeymoon Privilege Double Room or Privilege Suite – these come with 24-hour room service, access to the Pure Chill Out Bar and BLoved à la carte, one free water circuit in the Alegría Spa, plus a 10% discount on a romantic dinner.
Facilities
There's a lengthy list of facilities here, including seven restaurants, seven bars, two snack bars and four pools. Activities-wise, there's everything from table tennis to scuba diving, and if you fancy a break from it all, you can head for the spa. Little ones, meanwhile, have a kids' club and separate sections in three of the pools. There's nightly entertainment here, too, plus a weekly beach or pool party.
Location
You can head for the Riviera Maya, on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and do nothing but sip cocktails on tropical beaches. But there's so much more on offer. Mayan ruins, eco parks, world-class diving – they’re all on the cards along this 30-kilometre stretch of coastline, which takes in lively Playa del Carmen and the quieter Punta Allen. Just so you know, beaches along this stretch of coastline can have a build-up of seaweed called sargassum. It’s a natural phenomenon influenced by ocean currents and seasonal weather patterns in the Caribbean, so it can be hard to predict when it’ll arrive. When there’s a lot of sargassum, hotel teams work continuously to keep the beaches as clean as possible.
