Suites are connected to the main lodge via raised wooden walkways, which lend itself to the lodge’s atmosphere of being elevated among the trees. Cape Of Good Hope Nature Reserve
Visit the meeting point of the Atlantic and Indian oceans. Rugged rocks and sheer cliffs towering more than 200 metres above the sea and cutting deep into the ocean, provide a spectacular background for the park’s rich bio-diversity. The natural fynbos vegetation of the areas comprises the smallest but richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. The Cape of Good Hope is also home to an abundant animal population, which includes zebra, ostriches, baboons, tortoises and dassies.
Take a funicular ride aboard the Flying Dutchman to an historical lighthouse built atop the cliffs of the Cape Point, which for centuries has warned passing ships of the dangerous rocks surrounding the Cape of Storms. From this vantage point, you can take in a panoramic view of the stunning bay.
Boulders Penguin Colony
The beautiful Boulders Beach is one of Cape Town’s most visited beaches and the only place in the world where you get close to African Penguins.
Cape Town definitely has no shortage of amazing beaches, but Boulders Beach in False Bay offers something extra special – a colony of African Penguins in all their smartly dresses, waddling glory, right under your nose. In fact, it’s the only place in the world where you can get close to African Penguins.
Table Mountain
One of the oldest mountains on the planet, this natural world heritage site, and Natural New 7 Wonder of the World, is the most iconic landmark of South Africa. Legend has it that the so-called “tablecloth” of clouds that pours over the side when a southeasterly wind blows up the mountain’s slopes is the result of a smoking contest between the devil and a retired sea captain named Jan van Hunks. More likely it's a matter of condensation, but the effect provides an awe-inspiring backdrop to the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town.
Flanked by Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head, Table Mountain marks the northern end of the Cape Fold Mountain range, which runs like a spine from north to south through the Cape Peninsula. There are more than 2,200 species of plants and 1,470 floral species found on Table Mountain, many of which are endemic to the area, and form part of the Cape Floral Region, the richest yet smallest floral kingdom on earth.
A range of routes offer ways to explore the mountain, from walks around the indigenous forest and lower peaks to rigorous hikes up, but the quickest way to the top is via the aerial tramway, and takes about five minutes. At the top, there's a cafe, some souvenir shops, and trails to enjoy the views, including the path to the summit, marked by Maclear's Beacon, a large cairn built by Sir Thomas Maclear in 1865 to assist in measuring the curvature of the earth.
Steenberg Golf Club
Rated among the top 3 golf courses to visit in South Africa, Steenberg, nestled in the crook of the Constantiaberg Mountains, lives up to its fame with a charming location amidst vineyards. Designed by the eminent golf course architect Peter Matkovich, Steenberg follows his principle that good golf course architects “listen to the land”.
The greens on the course are especially laudable, but the quality of the fairways or the rest of the course is in fact, equally impressive. Signature holes are the 7th and the 14th, with the longest green in Africa on the latter. Large aprons around the greens are another special feature and the vineyards also provide a unique visual aspect, as well as a charming added hazard.
Recently voted “Top foreign golf resort” by Conde Nast Traveller readers, Steenberg is one of the most prestigious golf courses in South Africa.
Stellenbosch
Founded in 1679, Stellenbosch is the second oldest European settlement in the Western province, after Cape Town. This historic town is known for oak lined cobblestone streets, classic Cape Dutch architecture, and its vibrant wine industry. Stellenbosch is a very walkable town with many small shops, boutiques, art galleries, some fabulous local restaurants and vineyards, and more than 100 wine cellars. There are a number of excellent hikes in the Jonkershoek Nature Reserve, as well as a full day Vineyard Hiking Trail which winds its way through vineyards, forests, olive groves, and coastal renosterveld.
Stellenbosch, along with nearby Paarl and Franschhoek, forms part of the Cape Winelands, the largest contributors to the one billion liters of wine produced in South Africa annually. It is approximately 50 km (30 mi) east of Cape Town, on a scenic road lined with breathtaking mountain ranges, green rolling hills and valleys and, as one approaches the Winelands, vineyards roll out in all directions. It is home to the University of Stellenbosch, founded in 1863, and today one of South Africa’s leading universities with nearly 30,000 students.
Clovelly Golf Course
Nestled in the tranquil Silvermine Valley between Fish Hoek and Kalk Bay, the Clovelly Country Club rewards accuracy off the tee and provides players with scenic views of the False Bay coastline. Known for its year round conditioning, the relatively short course possesses a unique character by virtue of its proximity to the sea. The dune lined fairways lead to excellent bent grass and poa annua greens; while the many trees create shelter from the strong summer sea breeze.
The rolling computer-irrigated fairways complement visually pleasing water features, which impact the 1st, 10th, 15th and 17th holes. The signature hole is the 4th, a par-4 with out-of-bounds and a stream on the left, and a green guarded by a water hazard. The clubhouse presents a high vantage point not only of the 18th hole, but also the 1st and 10th which both feature sharp doglegs, to the right and left respectively.
Erinvale Country & Golf Estate
The Erinvale golf course, designed by the legendary Gary Player, is conveniently located on the borders of Somerset West and only half an hour from the vibrant Cape Town. Having hosted the 1996 World Cup of Golf and the second oldest tournament in the world, the prestigious SAA Open in 2003 and 2004, Erinvale is no stranger to worldwide media coverage.
Built on a narrow stretch of land which escalates sharply uphill, Erinvale is an estate course with two distinctly different nines. The front nine is flat, winding its way through the park-like terrain estate which calls for challenging approach shots to the long narrow putting surfaces, while the back nine meanders through the foothills of the magnificent Helderberg, with breathtaking views of the False Bay coastline from the top holes. The signature par-four 17th hole requires golfers to play downhill from an elevated tee, with tall pines flanking one side of the fairway, and an out-of-bounds fence the other
De Zalze Golf Club
Having hosted both the Eisenhower Trophy and the Espirito Santo Trophy in October 2006, the De Zalze Golf Club, set on the 300-hectare greater Kliene Zalze Estate, is laid out in the midst of working vineyards and orchards backed by the spectacular Stellenbosch Mountain range. Located in the heart of the famous winelands of Stellenbosch, findly known as 'Little Europe', the superb holes are set on rolling and undulating terrain, meandering between grape on the vine, fruit on the tree and an array of great water features.
Renowned golf course architect, Peter Matkovich, has lent his name to the course, making most of the stunning setting while placing a premium on accuracy. The course has excellent Kikuyu fairways and large Bent Grass greens, all with the Matkovich trademark of finely manicured aprons. De Zalze offers a fine mix of parkland holes, its main defences being the water features on several of the holes. The oak-lined Blaauwklippen River winds its way through the golf estate and comes into play at various intervals.
Wine Walk At Waterford
South Africa boasts of a truly unique terroir amidst a richly diverse indigenous fauna an flora. Experience the Cape Winelands up close and personally with a scenic walk through the vineyards of Waterford Estate to a picnic spot, where a light lunch will be accompanied by a selection of three estate wines.
Return to Waterford's grande tasting centre for a dessert treat in the form of wine and chocolate tasting. Each chocolate has been specially crafted to compliment the flavours of the wine with which it is paired.
Anthonij Rupert Wine Farm
Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded on the farm L’Ormarins in Franschhoek. Originally owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, who passed away in 2001, the farm was taken over by his brother Johann Rupert in 2003. It was Johann Rupert who constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility on the estate, and the beginnings of what was to become a sprawling enterprise with a focus on terroir specific wines.
Set on the slopes of the Great Drakenstein Mountain range the Rupert Wines Estate comprises two historic farms: L’Ormarins and Anthonij Rupert Estate. Today the Estate houses two tasting rooms, four state-of-the-art cellars, a lovingly tended rose garden, vineyards, the Franschhoek Motor Museum and the Drakenstein Stud Farm. Thus offering up a great variety of things to do and see at the Rupert Wines Estate.
Ernie Els Wines
Thoughtfully selected for its prime position, Ernie Els winery is framed by panoramic views of Cape Town and Table Mountain to the west, and Stellenbosch and the Helderberg mountains to the east. A passage beyond our grand granite boulders, and through our wooden farmhouse-style doors will lead you into our homely, expansive tasting room and restaurant where you will be rewarded with exceptional wines and hearty farm-style cuisine.
Kruger Park
At 19,500 km2 (7,500 mi2), the world-renowned Kruger National Park is the largest national park in South Africa, and also the oldest in all of Africa. Given its size, numerous airports, and excellent access road, Kruger and its surrounding private game reserves are an attractive option for many travelers.
Kruger is best known for its high wildlife density, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo). Hundreds of other mammals and unique bird species also make their home in Kruger. Mountains, plains, and tropical forests are all part of the landscape, ensuring both scenic and exciting game drives.
Leopard Creek Country Club
Internationally recognised as a world class golf course, Leopard Creek, designed by Gary Player, is located strategically on the border of the Kruger National Park near Malelane. The course typifies the essence of African golf at its best with indigenous bushveld bordering the pristine fairways and greens. The course has hosted many PGA professional tournaments including the well known South African Sunshine Tour.
Home to the annual Alfred Dunhil Golf Tournament, this wonderful layout has numerous animals strolling on the fairways. It’s common to hear a buffalo snort or see a giraffe near the fence on your drive, while the pitch shot might need a hit over a lake full of crocodiles and hippos. The clubhouse, filled with golfing memorabilia, is one of the best in all of Africa: an extraordinary piece of architecture with a thatch roof.
