Exploring the Charm of River Cruises: A Relaxing Journey with APT Travel Marvel

Jasmin Kaur • 2 August 2024

River cruises offer a unique and intimate way to explore some of the world’s most beautiful destinations. Unlike ocean cruises, which often focus on the journey between ports, river cruises provide an ever-changing landscape, with stunning views right outside your window as you glide along historic rivers, past charming villages, and through scenic countryside. Whether you’re navigating the Danube, the Rhine, the Mekong, or the Nile, river cruises offer a leisurely and immersive travel experience, perfect for those who want to explore at a slower pace without sacrificing comfort or luxury.

The Allure of River Cruising

Intimate and Relaxed Atmosphere:: One of the main attractions of river cruising is the intimate atmosphere onboard. Most river cruise ships are smaller than their ocean-going counterparts, typically accommodating between 100 to 200 passengers. This creates a more personalized experience, where you can easily get to know fellow travellers and the crew. The smaller size also means the ship can dock in the heart of cities and towns, giving you easy access to explore on foot.

Scenic Cruising: Unlike ocean cruises, where days at sea might offer nothing but open water, river cruises provide almost continuous scenic views. Whether you’re passing through the vineyard-covered hills of the Rhine, the ancient temples along the Nile, or the bustling riverside markets of the Mekong, there’s always something interesting to see. Many river cruises also offer commentary from local guides, adding depth to your understanding of the region’s history and culture.

Cultural Immersion: River cruises are designed to immerse you in the local culture of the destinations you visit. Shore excursions often include guided tours of historic landmarks, visits to local markets, and opportunities to experience traditional music, dance, and cuisine. Since the ship often docks in smaller, less touristy towns, you’ll also have the chance to experience the authentic side of each destination.

Convenience and Comfort: Traveling by river cruise is incredibly convenient. You unpack once and enjoy the comfort of your well-appointed cabin throughout the journey, without the hassle of packing and unpacking at each destination. Many river cruises are all-inclusive, covering meals, drinks, shore excursions, and sometimes even gratuities, making it easier to budget for your trip.

Travel doesn’t have to end when the sun sets – in fact, it can just be beginning. Noctotourism , the practice of exploring destinations at night, is a growing trend that opens the door to unforgettable experiences. From night safaris and polar light chases to stargazing and nocturnal dives, the night offers a magical perspective that daytime simply cannot. Exploring the world in darkness lets you see nature, wildlife, and urban landscapes in a completely different light, creating memories that are often more intimate, mysterious, and unforgettable. Nighttime travelling offers many advantages: Peace and privacy – fewer crowds mean you can enjoy scenery and natural sites at ease. Unique natural phenomena – many wildlife activities, polar lights, and starry skies can only be fully experienced at night. Otherworldly atmosphere – familiar locations take on a new, magical character when illuminated by moonlight or are they swallowed by darkness Adventure and romance – from night safaris to nocturnal dives, noctotourism blends thrill with peace.

As the capital of Belgium and the administrative heart of the European Union, Brussels is a city that seamlessly blends political significance with cultural richness. Whether you prefer to explore on foot, by bike, bus, or tram, the city offers countless ways to discover its many charms. A Rich History and Stunning Architecture Brussels is home to numerous historical and architectural landmarks, some of which are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . Among the remarkable monuments that are waiting to be explored, the most iconic is the Grand-Place , a breathtaking central square surrounded by the Town Hall, and the King's House (Maison du Roi). A simple turn on the spot reveals centuries of history and stunning architecture. This vibrant square isn’t just beautiful — it's alive with activity year-round, hosting concerts, traditional fairs, cultural events, and the famous Flower Carpet every two years in the summer. Just a short walk away, you’ll also find the city’s mascot, the Manneken-Pis , a small statue with a big personality that has captured visitors’ imaginations for centuries. With its unique silhouette, The Atomium has, over time, grown to become the symbol of Brussels. On the inside it offers a beautiful view of the capital, and also an entirely astounding and surreal ride through its interior spaces and volumes which alone makes a visit worth. Other monuments to be discovered throughout the city include the elegant La Monnaie opera house, the historic Bourse , the grand National Basilica of the Sacred Heart , the impressive Justice Palace , and the beautifully maintained Royal Greenhouses of Laeken — an architectural gem surrounded by stunning gardens. And whether you want to enjoy a cup of coffee or chocolate, take a stroll or go shopping, don't forget to visit the Royal Saint-Hubert Galleries , a gorgeous glass-roofed arcade in the centre of Brussel.

As a marketing assistant at Barter’s Travelnet Cork, I’m lucky enough to be talking about and researching stunning destinations every day. One place that has stuck with me and become my favourite travel destination is Bilbao. My sister has lived there for the past 4 years, so I’ve been lucky enough to visit quite a few times, each time bringing new experiences and plenty of memories. When I found out that Cork Airport now has a direct flight to Bilbao, I think it's safe to say I was pretty excited. Bilbao: More Than Just a City Bilbao is one of those places that manages to surprise you each time you visit. It has a mix of modern architecture, historical charm, and an atmosphere that’s laid-back but buzzing at the same time. If you’re not familiar with the city, it’s probably best known for the Guggenheim Museum (definitely worth the visit), but there’s so much more to Bilbao than that. Every time I visit, I always feel like I’m uncovering something new. Whether it’s a quiet street in Casco Viejo or a hidden café serving the best coffee you’ve ever had, Bilbao always seems to have something up its sleeve.
