Cruising Solo with NCL: Why It’s a Perfect Choice for Solo Travelers

Anna Mc Carthy • 26 September 2024

Solo cruising is a great way to experience the freedom and fulfilment that comes with travelling alone. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers an experience created especially with solitary travellers in mind, whether you're an introvert seeking peaceful reflection or a social butterfly hoping to meet like-minded adventurers. Here are some reasons why NCL is the best cruise line for those travelling alone, whether you're thinking about taking a solo cruise for the first time or you're an experienced traveller searching for something new.

Studio Cabins: Designed with Solo Travelers in Mind

One of the biggest challenges for solo cruisers on most cruise lines is the cost. Typically, single travellers are charged a "single supplement," which means they pay nearly the same as two people sharing a room. But NCL has an innovative solution for this with its Studio Cabins.

Available on several ships, these cabins are not only budget-friendly but also thoughtfully designed for the solo traveller. Cosy yet modern, Studio Cabins feature everything you need in a compact space—comfortable beds, private bathrooms, and ambient lighting that creates a relaxing atmosphere. Plus, these rooms have access to an exclusive Studio Lounge, where solo travellers can socialize, enjoy a cup of coffee, or even plan excursions together.

Solo-Friendly Ships: A Sense of Community at Sea

For many solo travellers, meeting new people is a big part of the adventure, and NCL makes this easy. Their Freestyle Cruising concept means there’s no set dining time, so you’re free to eat when and with whom you want. Whether you join a group at the communal dining tables or opt for a quiet dinner on your own, the choice is yours.

The exclusive Studio Lounge, available to solo cabin guests, is a great spot for connecting with fellow solo travellers. The cruise staff often hosts informal gatherings for solo travellers, making it easier to meet others and form bonds. The relaxed and friendly environment ensures that, whether you're traveling alone or with new friends, you're never truly alone unless you want to be.

Variety of Onboard Activities for Every Mood

One of the best parts about cruising solo with NCL is that you can tailor the experience to your personal style. NCL ships are packed with activities, ensuring there’s always something for everyone, whether you're looking for peace and quiet or vibrant social interaction.

  • For the Social Traveller: NCL offers a range of group activities like trivia contests, cooking classes, and dance parties. You can join in on the fun, meet other cruisers, and bond over shared experiences. Many solo travellers find these activities a natural way to make friends.

  • For the Independent Explorer: Prefer time to yourself? There are plenty of places to escape the hustle and bustle. Unwind at the spa, catch a movie under the stars, or grab a quiet nook with a book. Solo travellers will also enjoy the flexible dining options, perfect for eating at your own pace without feeling rushed.

Shore Excursions: Adventures Tailored to Solo Travelers

NCL makes exploring ports of call easy and exciting for solo travellers. Their shore excursions are designed to cater to different types of travellers, whether you're interested in cultural immersion, adventure, or relaxation. The beauty of cruising solo is that you get to decide what experience best suits your travel style.

  • Join Group Excursions: If you enjoy the company of fellow travellers while exploring new destinations, NCL offers a variety of group excursions. These are fantastic for solo travellers because they allow you to be part of a group without the hassle of organizing it yourself. Plus, you might end up meeting fellow cruisers who share your interests.

  • Go Your Own Way: If you prefer venturing out on your own, NCL gives you the freedom to disembark and explore independently. With Freestyle Cruising, you're not confined to a strict schedule, so you can spend as much or as little time as you want in each port. Go at your own pace, discover hidden gems, and soak in the beauty of each destination—solo.

The Perfect Balance of Freedom and Socialization

NCL’s Freestyle Cruising gives solo travellers the freedom to create their own schedule, whether that means socializing or taking time for yourself. You can choose how much or how little interaction you want, making the experience highly customizable to your personal travel style. Want a quiet evening watching the sunset from the deck? No problem. Feel like hitting the casino or mingling at a themed party? Go for it!

Safety and Comfort for Solo Travelers

For those concerned about safety, cruising with NCL is a comfortable and secure option. The ships are equipped with attentive staff and onboard security, giving solo travellers peace of mind. Additionally, the cruise environment fosters a sense of community, where staff and fellow passengers are always nearby, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.

Norwegian Cruiseline

Cruising solo with Norwegian Cruise Line offers the perfect blend of independence, social opportunity, and relaxation. With dedicated accommodations, solo-friendly spaces, and a range of activities, NCL has thought of everything to ensure solo travelers feel welcome, engaged, and entertained throughout their journey. Noctotourism , the practice of exploring destinations at night, is a growing trend that opens the door to unforgettable experiences. Exploring the world in darkness lets you see nature, wildlife, and urban landscapes in a completely different light, creating memories that are often more intimate, mysterious, and unforgettable. Nighttime travelling offers many advantages: Peace and privacy – fewer crowds mean you can enjoy scenery and natural sites at ease. Unique natural phenomena – many wildlife activities, polar lights, and starry skies can only be fully experienced at night. Otherworldly atmosphere – familiar locations take on a new, magical character when illuminated by moonlight or are they swallowed by darkness Adventure and romance – from night safaris to nocturnal dives, noctotourism blends thrill with peace.

As a marketing assistant at Barter’s Travelnet Cork, I’m lucky enough to be talking about and researching stunning destinations every day. One place that has stuck with me and become my favourite travel destination is Bilbao. My sister has lived there for the past 4 years, so I’ve been lucky enough to visit quite a few times, each time bringing new experiences and plenty of memories. When I found out that Cork Airport now has a direct flight to Bilbao, I think it's safe to say I was pretty excited. Bilbao: More Than Just a City Bilbao is one of those places that manages to surprise you each time you visit. It has a mix of modern architecture, historical charm, and an atmosphere that’s laid-back but buzzing at the same time. If you’re not familiar with the city, it’s probably best known for the Guggenheim Museum (definitely worth the visit), but there’s so much more to Bilbao than that. Every time I visit, I always feel like I’m uncovering something new. Whether it’s a quiet street in Casco Viejo or a hidden café serving the best coffee you’ve ever had, Bilbao always seems to have something up its sleeve.
