Majorca also known as Mallorca, is one of the most popular and enchanting islands in the Mediterranean Sea. It is the largest of the Balearic Islands and boasts a diverse range of attractions from stunning beaches to historic towns and beautiful natural landscapes. Join us while we explore the island and uncover its sights.
Day 1
We depart Dublin on our direct flight to Palma. On arrival we will be met by our tour leader and our tour guide who will lead the group and will arrange our transfer by coach to our hotel. We will be staying for 5 nights in the 4 star Las Arenas Hotel which is located in Ca’n Pastilla overlooking the sea. Dinner tonight and every night will be in the hotel.
Day 2
After breakfast we embark on a guided tour of Palma. Our first stop will be at the Gothic Bellver Castle which was built in the XIV century. The Castle is situated on a hill overlooking the Bay of Palma, from this point we enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the coastline. We continue to the city centre where we visit the Cathedral. Built in gothic style in the XIV century it is one of the most emblematic buildings in the Mediterranean and one of the tallest cathedrals in Europe. Nearby is the Palacio de la Almundaina, built during the Arab domination of Majorca as a fortress. It was later used by Jaume II, Sancho I and James III. Nowadays, it is used by the Spanish Royal Family as the official residence, when visiting the island today. (Outside visit only). We will continue the visit walking through the main streets in the old town passing by the Town Hall and the Plaza Mayor with its portico square and the main shopping area. We will have some free time before we head back to the hotel. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 3
After breakfast we travel by coach to the railway station on the outskirts of Palma. Here we board the vintage train of 1929 to the village of Soller. During the one hour journey through the beautiful countryside and Tramuntana mountain range we will enjoy magnificent views. On arrival in Soller we will have free time to admire the village, house facades, the central square, the Saint Bartholomew Church and some time for lunch. We will then take the vintage tram to Port of Soller, this takes approximately 20 minutes. On arrival to Port of Soller we have free time at leisure for lunch.
After lunch our route continues by coach along the mountain coastline the Serra de Tramuntana, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Through the almond and olive groves we pass the picturesque village of Deia, home to the late Robert Graves. On our way back to the hotel we will drive through Valledemosa giving us a little taster of what’s to come.
Day 4
The morning is free to explore. There are fantastic options depending on your interests or you could relax by the pool or take a walk along the beachfront.
After lunch we travel by coach to the east coast of Majorca. We go through the centre of the island of Port Cristo to visit the impressive Caves of Drach, a series of mysterious caverns that hide the world’s largest underground lake. The play of shadow and light on the caves’ walls create fascinating abstract images. Here, there will be a short violin concert played from rowing boats. We will have some free time here before we head back to the hotel.
Day 5
After breakfast we head to Valldemossa. We drive to the Northwest of the island and then on into the mountains to the beautiful and peaceful village of Valldemossa. Here we visit the Carthusian Monastery and the special museum dedicated to Chopin and George Sand who stayed on the island in winter of 1838/ 1839 during which time the pianist composed some of his best-known works. Then in the Palace del Rey Don Sancho there is a short piano concert in memory of this famous composer. After some free time to stroll around the village we will drive to a sightseeing point in the north coast, to admire the beauty of this area, which is World Heritage by the UNESCO. We will have some free time here. We will then return by coach to our hotel. The rest of the afternoon is free to explore.
